Undercity Kings have been around longer than most punk bands dare to dream. Originally formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, the band carries a history that includes real tragedy: founder Tommy Walters and several others were killed in a car accident on Pacific Coast Highway in 1983, just after the group had made recordings. The band eventually reformed, changed lineups over the decades, and ultimately relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, where they continue to operate today. Fun Sucker, released in 2023, is a seven-track EP built partly around unreleased lyrics from Walters himself, making it as much a tribute as it is a punk record. Vocalist Tami Mitchell leads the current lineup, bringing a fierce and unfiltered delivery that carries the weight of the band’s long history without ever slowing down.
Track by Track
1. HERE’S A BUCK
The opener wastes no time. Jagged guitars and relentless drums kick in immediately, setting the pace for everything that follows. At a minute and a half, it does exactly what a good punk opener should: grab you, shake you, and dare you to keep up.
2. CASH TIPS
The title suggests a working-class frustration that fits perfectly into the DNA of this record. At nearly two minutes it is one of the longer tracks on the EP, and it uses that extra time to build a little more momentum before cutting loose. The tone is sarcastic and pointed, which is exactly what you want from a punk band that has been at this for over four decades.
3. PENDEJO
The title is blunt and the track follows suit. This one sounds personal, the kind of song that gets written about someone specific with full intent behind every word. The guitars are aggressive and the delivery is all attitude. It fits snugly in the middle of the EP and keeps the momentum from ever dropping.
4. SOCIETY SPELL
The most socially pointed title on the record, and the track backs it up. Punk has always pushed back against conformity and distraction, and this one feels squarely in that tradition. There is an urgency to the delivery here that makes it stand out, and at a minute thirty-three it hits hard and moves on without overstaying its welcome.
5. FUN SUCKER
The title track clocks in at under a minute, which is about as punk as it gets. Fast, loud, and done before you can blink. It’s a statement in itself.
6. GFY
The title needs no explanation. This one is a short, sharp burst of pure attitude and it might be the most straightforwardly fun track on the EP. The guitars are loud, the tempo is unrelenting, and the whole thing is over in under two minutes. No frills, no apologies, and no interest whatsoever in your opinion of it. Classic punk.
7. UNDERCITY KINGS
The closer brings in male vocals alongside the record’s female lead, adding a different dimension to round out the EP. It’s a fitting way to end a record that functions as a tribute to the band’s founder and the musicians who built this thing over four decades. The raw production quality throughout gives the whole EP a vintage feel, and this track leans into that fully.
Final Thoughts
Fun Sucker runs about ten minutes total, and it does not waste a single one of them. This is old-school Southern California punk with sunburnt Hawaiian energy, recorded with a raw, almost live quality that suits the material perfectly. The fact that several of these tracks incorporate unrecorded lyrics from founder Tommy Walters gives the EP a weight that goes well beyond the runtime. Undercity Kings are not trying to reinvent anything here. They are keeping a flame alive, and they do it with conviction.
