Under-Volt are a progressive, bluesy grunge duo out of Edinburgh, Scotland, made up of Jed Potts on guitar and vocals and Vini Bonnar on drums and vocals. Formed in 2020 when the pandemic gave the two longtime friends unexpected free time, the pair bring more than 50 years of combined live and studio experience to the project, drawn from bands including Bombskare, Jed Potts & The Hillman Hunters, The Katet, Thunkfish, Swampfog, Engines of Vengeance, and Cloth Cat. The stripped-down two-piece format let them move quickly, and Under-Volt built a full set of original material almost immediately, playing their first show at Legends in Edinburgh in October 2021. Their debut album, Let’s Just Go, arrived on Wasted State Records in April 2023, with a follow-up album due later in 2026. Their new single, “Over-ride,” is the album’s original opening track, now getting its own dedicated spotlight ahead of that next release.

“Over-ride” wastes no time making its intentions clear, launching straight into a high-voltage riff from Potts that twists and fractures as it goes, never settling into one straightforward pattern for long. Bonnar’s drumming matches that restlessness beat for beat, chaotic and propulsive in a way that keeps the track feeling live and unpredictable rather than tightly rehearsed. Midway through, the energy drops into a darker, more atmospheric stretch, a genuine shift in mood that lets tension build before the song claws its way back into full force for the close. It’s a strong showcase of exactly what a two-piece can do with the right chemistry, big, riff-driven, and loose enough to feel dangerous without ever losing its shape.
Final Thoughts
“Over-ride” is a fitting introduction to Under-Volt’s sound, heavy, unpredictable, and built on real musical chemistry between two players who clearly know each other’s instincts inside and out.
