Robert Allen has been at this long enough to know exactly what he wants. Working under the name DownTown Mystic since his 2011 debut album Standing Still, the American rocker has spent fifteen years building a catalog that draws from the Byrds, the Beatles, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen, filtered through his own obsession with analog recording and the feel of classic rock music made by real musicians in a room together. That philosophy has paid off in ways that most independent artists never experience. Over 250 television shows and films have used DownTown Mystic music in sync licensing, including appearances on NBC’s The Voice, the History Channel’s American Pickers, MTV, CNN, and National Geographic. His music has aired on over 5,000 radio stations in 50 countries.
The project has also attracted an extraordinary roster of collaborating musicians. Drummer Steve Holley, who played with Paul McCartney and Wings, Elton John, and Ian Hunter, and bassist Paul Page from Dion and Ian Hunter’s Rant Band form the rhythm section backbone on multiple releases. Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rhythm section from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, have contributed to previous recordings including the On E Street projects. Guitarists Lance Doss, Bruce Engler, and Justin JJ Jordan have each brought distinct voices to the catalog. Allen’s advice from early in his career has always been to surround himself with players better than himself, and the results speak for themselves.
2025 was a significant year. The Mystic Highway EP, released November 7 via The Orchard/Sony Music, brought six tracks of roots rock featuring Holley and Page with the trio of Doss, Engler, and Jordan on guitars. Sync licensing continued to grow with three film soundtrack placements, including two songs in Everything’s Going to Be Great starring Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney, and one in Sovereign with Dennis Quaid and Nick Offerman. The On E Street Remix project followed in early 2026, revisiting recordings made with Weinberg and Tallent.

The Mystic Highway Road Trip EP is scheduled for release on July 10, 2026, and arrives as the next chapter in the ongoing DownTown Mystic story. Based on the pattern of recent releases, it is likely to continue the vintage-yet-modern roots rock approach that has defined the project, with the rotating cast of world-class musicians that has become one of DownTown Mystic’s most recognizable characteristics.
Allen has spoken about having new music he has been sitting on and waiting to release, including a track featuring guitarist George Marinelli that he has described as a killer. Whether any of that material appears on this EP is not yet confirmed, but the trajectory of the project suggests another focused, well-crafted release from one of the more consistently quality independent rock acts currently working.
