DJ Rittenhouse is a country, pop, and rock artist from Preston, Maryland, who describes himself simply as a down-to-earth country boy looking to get his music out into the world. His song “Country Runs Deep” is a tribute to his hometown and makes the case that you do not have to live in the South to be country at heart.
“My Way Back Home” is a different kind of song, and one he has carried with him for a long time. He wrote it roughly twenty years ago, in the middle of one of the hardest chapters of his life, and is only now sharing it with the world.
My Way Back Home
The story behind the song is a heavy one. It came out of a stretch of around eight years when he was battling severe depression, after his young daughter was the victim of a traumatic attack. Songs born from moments like that can easily sink under their own weight, but this one keeps its eyes on the way out rather than the bottom of the pit.
That is where its strength lies. “My Way Back Home” does not pretend the bad years never happened, and it does not cover the pain with easy comfort. Instead, it treats recovery as something slow and hard-won, a matter of putting one foot in front of the other until the light starts to creep back in. Anyone who has lived through a long, dark season of their own will understand exactly where he is coming from.
Final Thoughts
“My Way Back Home” is an honest, deeply personal song from someone who went through the worst and made it out the other side. It deserves to be heard. Make sure you add it to your rotations.
