The multi-talented Perth-born, now Sydney-based singer-songwriter St. South (she/they) has released her heartfelt and deeply moving new EP, BIG SADS.
About St. South
St. South is the creative identity of Perth-born, Sydney-based singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Gavranich (she/they). Describing her sound as “heartbreak indie-pop that you can feel and heal to,” St. South gained attention with the self-released debut EP Nervous Energy in 2016, which amassed millions of streams and featured on popular TV shows like The Vampire Diaries and The Fosters. This success was followed by 2017’s Inure EP. In 2020, St. South unveiled their debut full-length album, Get Well Soon, which unfolds a deeply personal journey through grief, heartbreak, and self-love.
The New EP
This five-track collection delves into the most intimate corners of her soul, reflecting on themes of grief, love, hope, and healing. St. South transforms personal vulnerabilities—almost like entries from her diary—into beautifully crafted moments of connection. Below, we will be doing a track by track walkthrough of each track. 1. Big Sads
This track is exceptionally well-crafted. It has a slower tempo which is perfect for setting the tone of the EP. It is a creative and impressive piece of work. Her lyrics are sharp and thoughtful, with harmonies that are beautifully executed. Her vocals are stunning. Her tone and delivery are both impressive. Definitely a standout this week.
2. A Good Year
What’s refreshing about St. South is her consistent ability to bring something new to each of her songs. In this track, the instrumentals take center stage, perfectly complementing her powerful vocals. A lot of people will relate to this song in the end. Definitely one of the stronger tracks on the EP.
3. So Many Places
Instrumentally, this track stands out from some of her previous work, embracing a more ethereal sound that perfectly complements her voice. The dream-like quality of the music adds depth, while her storytelling remains top-notch, further elevating the entire song.
4. Better Days
This is yet another captivating track, with a hauntingly beautiful melody that lingers and draws you in. The vocals, once again, are breathtaking and perfectly complement the instrumental arrangement. It’s a truly memorable piece.
5. Didn’t Need You
This is a powerful track to close the EP. Her vocals are stunning and truly take center stage here. The lyricism that has been impressive throughout the entire EP shines brilliantly in this final song. Be sure to add this EP to your playlists—you won’t want to miss it.
