South Swell Syndicate is the reggae rock project of Long Beach, California’s Mick Attardo, born out of an unexpected place. After walking away from music years earlier to focus on a career in insurance, Attardo picked the guitar back up as a way to process the loss of his brother in January 2023. A friend overheard him playing and suggested he try recording, so he reached out to acclaimed SoCal producer Lewis Richards, known for his work with Dirty Heads, Long Beach Dub Allstars, and Fortunate Youth, and was in the studio two days later. New single “Go Where I Please” is the title track from the band’s debut album of the same name, released summer 2026.

The song sets an easy, reflective tone, a laid-back meditation on tuning out life’s distractions and just being present. Attardo has described wanting the track to pull listeners away from the daily grind entirely, dropping them into a secluded, timeless island paradise where nothing else can reach them. That intention comes through clearly in the sound itself, drawing on Attardo’s Long Beach upbringing and its steady diet of classic rock, reggae, hip hop, punk, and ska, filtered through a genuinely relaxed groove that leans into feel over flash. He’s self-deprecating about the project as a whole, describing himself as little more than a regular guy messing around writing songs in his bedroom, but “Go Where I Please” carries real intention underneath that casual framing, less an escapist fantasy than a quiet insistence on living life on your own terms.
