NOR.BE is a guitar-led, largely instrumental project recently signed to Right Track/Universal Music, which opened with the debut single “All For You,” a track backed by bassist John Patitucci and the full Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague. “Once” is the seventh track on the album A Dream Come True, a collaboration-heavy record that also features guest players like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, and it pairs drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Mohini Dey, and jazz guitarist Fawzi Chekili with that same orchestra for a high-wattage result.

Once

The song opens on a groove built from drums, horns, and strings, and the production is busy without ever feeling cluttered, with every part given enough room to be heard. Colaiuta’s rolls and punches push the track along while the horns and strings add depth, and the arrangement shifts from one mood and style to another, which keeps the song from ever feeling predictable. The changes fit together well, and each element works with the others instead of competing.

One of its most interesting touches is the use of wordless male and female voices. Rather than sitting on top of the music, they blend into the arrangement almost like another instrument, carrying melody and giving the song its emotional color as it looks back on a memory.

The song’s shape adds to that feeling. It starts in a contemplative mood before opening into brighter, sunnier stretches and finishing as a feel-good piece, an arc that makes the music seem to lead you through different moments of a single memory. That sense of movement, together with its precision and emotional touch, is what makes “Once” special. It’s a track that offers something new on repeat plays.

The lineup helps. With a drummer like Colaiuta, a bassist like Dey, a jazz guitarist like Chekili, and a full symphony orchestra all contributing, the arrangement gains a richness and color that few tracks manage, and the result is an impressive piece of production with engaging instrumentation, expressive melodies, and changes that keep a listener hooked from start to finish.

Final Thoughts

“Once” is a groove-forward, emotionally rich track that uses a world-class cast to tell a story of memory in motion. Stream it on Spotify, find more from the project on Apple Music and Amazon Music, and read our earlier feature on NOR.BE’s debut single, “All For You.”
