Black Lotus is an avant-goth collective built around music, film, photography, movement, installation, and performance art, with each release developing into its own distinct sonic and visual world. Rooted in gothic art rock and gothic art metal, the project moves fluidly through post-punk, dark pop, wave, and experimental territory, shifting its language from one release to the next. Their new single, “Dreams of Snakes,” marks the first release from the collective’s forthcoming concept EP, In a Room Full of Dreams, and brings the project’s core artist, Thai, together with Belgian musician Geert Coppens for a new audiovisual collaboration spanning music, vocals, and video.
Dreams of Snakes
In a Room Full of Dreams centers on synesthesia, the perceptual phenomenon where one sense can involuntarily trigger another, hearing color in sound or feeling music as texture and movement. Black Lotus expands that idea outward into dreams, memory, and symbolism, building a world where clocks split apart, numbers slip away, shadows divide, and ordinary objects start behaving by dream logic instead of familiar rules. It’s a fitting evolution for the project, which pushes its established gothic core further into noir pop, wave, and dark electronic territory on this release.
Geert Coppens brings his own history to the collaboration, with roots running through Belgium’s early minimal wave, darkwave, and coldwave scenes via projects like Twilight Ritual, Autumn, Linear Movement, and Faceless 50. On “Dreams of Snakes,” he joins Thai as part of a vocal duo and contributes to the EP’s broader musical and visual direction, including its video work. Thai’s own background spans professional dance, photography, video, installation, and performance art, pushing Black Lotus well past a conventional band setup and into something closer to an immersive, intermedia experience. That shared visual sensibility runs through the whole project too, with the In a Room Full of Dreams imagery growing out of Thai’s love of physical records and their artwork, an idea Coppens connected with instantly through his own memories of studying album sleeves in record stores. The result is a collaboration that genuinely merges two artistic histories, Coppens’ Belgian experimental electronic roots and Thai’s evolving world of gothic music and visual storytelling, into one shared piece.
Final Thoughts
“Dreams of Snakes” is an ambitious, atmosphere-first introduction to a bigger concept work, and it should appeal to fans of darkwave, noir pop, and gothic art rock looking for something built around a genuinely cohesive vision.
