Nashville-based LGBTQ+ indie-rock artist Abby Nissenbaum is gearing up for the release of her new EP Want to Be Wrong, due out June 26, just in time for Pride Month. If you have not heard her name yet, now is the time to pay attention.
Nissenbaum is not your typical indie-rock artist. A lifelong musician and classically-trained soprano, she spent her youth performing in regional pro-am theatre and originally set out to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre before pivoting to Social Psychology. She rediscovered her music roots during her time as a graduate student at the University of Memphis, and eventually made her way to Nashville, where she began reimagining her classical vocal background in an indie-rock setting. That combination of formal training and raw emotional honesty is exactly what makes her stand out.
Her lyricism spans mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, and societal commentary, and she has built a passionate following among fans searching for music that speaks directly to their personal experiences. The EP was produced by Martin Trevox, a singer, songwriter, and music producer based in Valencia, Spain, working alongside Argentina-based producer and mix engineer Fede Catenaro. The international duo brings a modern pop edge to Nissenbaum’s emotionally driven sound without softening any of its edges.
In her own words, Nissenbaum describes the EP this way: “Want To Be Wrong is an EP about self-fulfilling prophecies and an intentionally overdramatic sense of romantic fatalism. Throughout the album, there are moments of genuine fear, loneliness, exhaustion, and resignation, but they’re balanced with a theatrical yearning that occasionally borders on the farcical. I ultimately wanted to write songs that captured the feeling of searching for intimacy in an increasingly fissured and isolated world, where people are more connected than ever and yet often seem incapable of truly reaching one another.”
That is a remarkably honest way to frame a record, and it tracks with everything her music has delivered so far. Her songs move between melancholy and humor, vulnerability and defiance, in a way that feels natural rather than calculated. The lead-up single “Why Does No One Want Me” has already been making the rounds and gives a strong preview of what the EP has in store.
Want to Be Wrong drops June 26. Keep an eye on this one.
