Xavier Bryant works out of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in R&B and soul, and he’s picked a demanding set of ancestors to stand alongside. Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, that’s the lineage he’s drawing from, and inviting those comparisons is not a small thing to do. The project isn’t about preserving that tradition behind glass, though. It’s about arguing that it still has somewhere left to go.
“All On My Grind” arrived August 21st through Epic Glyph Records, following “High Stakes,” “Gunz Blazin” and “Red Eye” earlier in the year. It’s been a productive stretch.
All On My Grind
The record runs two minutes and seventeen seconds, which is lean by any measure and especially so for soul, a genre that historically likes room to stretch out. There’s no long intro here and no extended fade. Bryant makes his case and steps back.
What he’s doing is threading those older instincts through production that sits firmly in the present. The classic elements aren’t ornamental, they’re structural, and the contemporary touches on top keep the whole thing from reading as an exercise in nostalgia. That’s a harder balance than it sounds. Lean too far one way and you get pastiche; too far the other and the soul foundation stops mattering at all.
The subject is right there in the title. This is a song about work, about persistence, and about the responsibility that comes with having a talent in the first place, the idea that ability sitting unused isn’t worth much. Soul music has its own long history with that theme, separate from the way hip-hop tends to handle it, and Bryant is writing from inside that older conversation rather than the newer one.
It also says something about how he sees himself as an artist. Bryant uses the track to sketch out a personality rather than just deliver a message, and across a runtime this short, that’s most of what a single needs to accomplish.
Final Thoughts
“All On My Grind” is a compact, purposeful record from an artist who clearly knows the tradition he’s working in and isn’t intimidated by it. Anyone who keeps Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass in regular rotation should find something familiar here, delivered by someone with no interest in simply repeating them.
