Prem Byrne is an independent singer-songwriter based in Woodacre, California, whose music pairs the reach of pop with the gentleness of folk. He grew up in India, where he and his younger sister were raised by their single mother with very little to go around, and hardship was never far away. That upbringing runs right through his writing, which tends to side with people who get overlooked or pushed aside and aches for a fairer world.

“Good Friend” follows fifteen earlier singles, among them a recording of “Imagine” featuring Shranny and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

Good Friend

Most songs about friendship point outward, toward the people who show up for us when things get tough. “Good Friend” turns the camera around. It is about the way we treat ourselves, and the idea that we deserve the same patience, gentleness, and understanding we would happily offer anyone else we care about. Byrne has said this is a lesson he has been slowly absorbing for years, and one that took decades of living before he felt he could sing it honestly.

His angle is that change does not have to start with beating yourself up. Accepting where you are right now, flaws and all, can be the first real step toward getting better. Byrne handles both the guitar and the vocals himself, and the song moves easily between folk, pop, and rock, with a warm, heartfelt voice carrying the message without ever pushing too hard. It is a message plenty of people need to hear and rarely tell themselves.

Final Thoughts

“Good Friend” is a kind, quietly encouraging song with a lesson worth holding onto. Be as good to yourself as you are to everyone else.
