Los Hermanos Alacranes are a Richmond, Virginia band founded in 2023 by singer-songwriter Paulo Franco and drummer Rob Lytle, built around fusing Latin melodies with American rock and roll. Franco, a first-generation American whose parents were raised in Medellรญn, sings in both English and fluent Spanish, and the band describes its sound as cinematic rock with a Spanish soul. New single “Colombia Te Espera,” produced by Grammy-winning Los Lobos member Steve Berlin, previews their forthcoming album Twilight Songs.
Colombia Te Espera
At the center of “Colombia Te Espera” sits a genuinely moving detail: the accordion heard throughout the track once belonged to Franco’s father, who played it for him during a childhood trip to Medellรญn back in 1971. Franco had assumed the instrument was long gone until discovering his mother had kept it all along, and keyboardist Daniel Clarke now plays that same accordion on the recording, turning a song about a country into something that also travels through family history.
Musically, the track is big, colorful, and restless, moving through Bogotรก, Cali, Medellรญn, Cartagena, Santa Marta, and Barranquilla, along with the Amazon and Magdalena rivers, the emeralds of Boyacรก, and the eastern Llanos, blending salsa and vallenato with Carnival imagery, Colombian cowboy culture, and muscular rock and roll. It plays less like a guided tour than a rush of memory and association, the kind of portrait that could only come from someone who genuinely carries the place with him. The timing adds real weight too. Colombia has recently faced renewed violence and a serious earthquake, circumstances that shape how the country gets covered internationally, and “Colombia Te Espera” doesn’t argue against that coverage directly so much as insist there’s a much fuller, more alive version of the country worth celebrating alongside it. The result never turns solemn about its own heritage, staying danceable and full of genuine joy even while carrying real history underneath.
