Leave The Bones is the project of Jeremy Bogen, who is based in Costa Rica but shaped by places as different as Minnesota and Chamonix. His work telling stories for humanitarian organizations has fed naturally into his songwriting, and one of his early influences came from his father, who described John Prine sitting in Chicago with a six-pack and playing until it was gone, a picture of simply being yourself, trusting your voice, and standing behind your words. His new single, “Heart On My Sleeve,” is built on that philosophy.

Heart On My Sleeve

The song opens with a reverberating, psychedelic guitar soundscape and a thoughtful, almost cerebral vocal, then settles into Americana-folk built from acoustic guitar and ethereal pads. The delivery is deliberately offbeat, nonchalant and slightly odd, even sluggish in places, which gives it a weathered character that some listeners will find divisive and others will find magnetic. Rather than sanding the sound down into modern Americana gloss, Leave The Bones leaves the grain showing, with low-mid warmth, slow-burning guitar, and an ambient haze that makes the track feel intimate and a little eerie.

Underneath that rough surface runs a defiant streak. The song carries an outlaw attitude without theatrical toughness, using restraint instead of volume to make its point, and it reads as if it was written at the moment patience with toxic people runs out and self-preservation grows teeth. There’s a spiritual side to the defiance too, the sense that vulnerability doesn’t have to mean weakness, and that protecting your energy can mean drawing a line and telling anything toxic in your life to leave you in peace. The strange vocal phrasing strengthens that stance because it sounds lived-in rather than rehearsed for approval.

There’s no rush toward a giant chorus or a polished emotional payoff. Acoustic riffs hold the ground while atmospheric pads widen the darkness around them, and the song simply sits in its conviction. It won’t suit everyone and clearly doesn’t intend to, and that refusal is exactly its appeal for listeners who prefer character over gloss. For those who want more, the wider catalogue includes “Darker Still” and “I’m On Fire.”

Final Thoughts

“Heart On My Sleeve” is a gritty, stubborn slice of folk and Americana that trusts honesty over polish, and it’s a strong introduction to Leave The Bones. Stream it on Spotify, or find the full catalogue on the artist’s Spotify page.
