Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard are a Netherlands-based project led by songwriter Joseph Turner, working with a rotating collective of musicians rather than a fixed lineup. Following the well-received single “The Shadow Remains,” their new track, “Backbone,” pushes further into the blues side of their Americana sound. It was produced by Turner himself alongside longtime collaborators Yannich Bovens on mixing and Sam Moses on mastering.

Turner has described the song as being about pushing past overthinking and finding the stubborn determination to keep moving when life piles on obstacles, and that idea comes through in lyrics built around digging, sweat, and the small, physical acts of just getting back to work. There’s real humor and mischief in the writing too, giving the track the feel of a group of friends finding their rhythm together after a long day rather than a solemn statement on perseverance. Notably, Turner initially built the shovel sound using a set of necklaces before recording an actual shovel for the final version, a detail that fits the track’s scrappy, do-it-yourself spirit perfectly.
