Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard are a Netherlands-based project led by songwriter Joseph Turner, working with a rotating collective of musicians rather than a fixed lineup. Following the well-received single “The Shadow Remains,” their new track, “Backbone,” pushes further into the blues side of their Americana sound. It was produced by Turner himself alongside longtime collaborators Yannich Bovens on mixing and Sam Moses on mastering.

“Backbone” opens on subtle natural textures and twanging, slightly off-kilter guitar before the sound of a shovel hitting dirt locks into the groove alongside foot stomps and handclaps, immediately setting a dusty, hands-on tone. Turner has described the song as being about pushing past overthinking and finding the stubborn determination to keep moving when life piles on obstacles, and that idea comes through in lyrics built around digging, sweat, and the small, physical acts of just getting back to work. There’s real humor and mischief in the writing too, giving the track the feel of a group of friends finding their rhythm together after a long day rather than a solemn statement on perseverance. Sonically, the arrangement leans into acoustic roots-rock with plenty of grit, harmonica weaving in bluesy twang alongside the central guitar, bass, and drums, while a gang of backing vocalists brings a stomping, gospel-adjacent energy that turns the track’s back half into something closer to a communal celebration than a simple song about hardship. Notably, Turner initially built the shovel sound using a set of necklaces before recording an actual shovel for the final version, a detail that fits the track’s scrappy, do-it-yourself spirit perfectly.
