ErickOscar is a Panamanian-American singer-songwriter who has played acoustic guitar with his church worship band for more than 35 years and written over 1,200 songs. Born in Panamá, he moved to the United States decades ago and has also worked across Latin America, and he writes and sings in both English and Spanish. His new single, “Compás de tu Querer,” comes from his 10-track album Dime Que Sí, a record that leans further into the Latin side of his identity through reggaeton, merengue, bachata, ballads, and Latin pop.
Compás de tu Querer
ErickOscar wrote the song for his wife, describing it as a love poem built from the many things he feels when he thinks of her: feeling alive, connected to the world, ready to do whatever he needs to for her sake, and aware that she is the heartbeat behind everything else. That personal starting point shapes the whole track, which plays as a straightforward declaration of love set to a reggaeton rhythm, giving a very old kind of feeling a modern, danceable body.
The song opens on an image that could have come from a traditional romantic ballad, a night full of stars, wind, and mountains, with the sky itself seeming to tremble. From there it layers in scents and colors drawn from Spanish-language poetic tradition, cinnamon, carnation, and jasmine, while the narrator admits he doesn’t know how to pray but does know how to sing to her. That line is where the song most interestingly connects love and faith. Rather than leaving the spiritual side of ErickOscar’s writing behind, the song relocates it, turning the devotion he’d normally direct toward worship into romantic devotion instead.
The second half of the song introduces a small story from before. There was a stretch of silence in the relationship, one where he loved fully and the other person loved only in fits and starts, but things have changed, and the song becomes a celebration of that turn. He wants her to hear him clearly, wants the stars to know he’s come to win her heart, and calls on the wind and the sea as witnesses. That kind of exaggeration is part of the romantic tradition the song belongs to, when a feeling is too big for a person, the landscape has to grow to match it. It also stands in clear contrast to his recent single “Let Me Tell You Now,” which is about learning to stop hiding feelings. Here the feelings are already out in the open, and the song is more passionate and more firmly tied to Latin musical tradition because of it.
