“One More Angel” was originally co-written by Raul Malo and Alan Miller and featured on Malo’s 2009 solo album Lucky One. The song confronts mortality and loss head-on, which makes it a fitting way to honor an artist whose voice drew comparisons to some of the greatest singers in popular music. As both frontman of The Mavericks and a solo artist, Malo earned that kind of praise across a long career before passing away in December 2025 at age 60, following an 18-month battle with cancer.
For Alexandrakis, the tribute carries a three-decade connection that traces back to his early years in Miami, when his path first crossed with Malo and The Mavericks. Malo’s death from cancer, paired with Alexandrakis’ own two battles with the disease, gives the song real emotional weight beyond the usual tribute-track formula. Alexandrakis sings and plays multiple instruments on the track and handled the bulk of the production himself, but the song is also a genuine gathering of collaborators: musician EJ Ouellette contributes violin, viola, mandolin, and slide electric guitar, former Mavericks accordion player Michael Guerra brings an authentic thread back to the source material, fellow University of Miami School of Music alum Leo Nobre plays bass, teenage drummer Tanner Hughes handles the kit, Canadian rock artist Pennan Brae and harpist Theresa Bentley round out the arrangement, and frequent collaborator Paul David Hager, whose credits include work with Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, the Jonas Brothers, Van Halen, and Devo, handled the mix.
Musically, the arrangement layers those instruments and textures well beyond the usual boundaries of classic Americana. Accordion gives the track an unmistakably roots-oriented character, even a touch of playful energy, while electronic drums and subtle digital elements pull in a more contemporary edge without ever crowding out the song’s organic feel. Despite the number of moving parts, the spacious mix keeps the melody and vocal performance front and center throughout, letting the tribute breathe rather than burying it under production.

A companion limited-edition vinyl EP, capped at 500 units and featuring a coloring-book-style insert of Renaissance paintings, is set to arrive exclusively through Elastic Stage, with all vinyl proceeds going to the American Cancer Society in Malo’s name.
