Every so often a dance track shows up trying to say something instead of just filling a room, and “Can’t Own Me” from Paris producer ELTUS is one of those. He’s a solo operation from top to bottom, no co-writers, no outside mix engineers, everything from the first idea to the finished master runs through him alone. Ask him why and the answer’s pretty simple: bring in more hands and the song starts drifting from whatever you originally meant by it. His records tend to live somewhere between bass house and progressive house, though he’s not precious about staying in one lane, each release seems to find its own shape depending on what it needs to say.
By the time “Can’t Own Me” came out, he’d already put a few singles behind him, “Not Forever” back in December, an Arabic-language take on “Don’t Forget Me” in February, “Hush Hush Hush” in the months after that. Each one added a little more momentum heading into this release.

The song apparently started with something ELTUS actually saw, not something he made up. He’s talked about watching a woman somewhere on his travels quietly refuse to let someone else define her, no confrontation, just a flat, calm no, and that image is what he built the entire track around. It’s a good reminder that a dance record can come from somewhere real instead of just a studio brainstorm.
Vocalist Askella carries that idea through the song, and she’s mixed like she matters, not buried under the drop the way a lot of featured vocalists end up. Her delivery leans controlled rather than loud, which somehow makes the defiance in the lyrics hit harder than yelling would have. ELTUS builds the track patiently around her instead of racing to the biggest possible moment early, so once the low end and the drums do finally open up all the way, there’s already something emotionally real underneath holding it together.
It’s built for a club, no question, big bass, a groove designed to move a room. But take away the club and the song doesn’t fall apart, it works just as well alone with headphones in, which is a harder trick than it sounds like.
Final Thoughts
Good backstory, song that actually lives up to it, not the most common combination. “Can’t Own Me” makes a strong case for keeping an eye on both ELTUS and Askella.
