D.D.R. is the melodic rock project of Indiana-based singer-songwriter and novelist Stephen Paul, who treats every song as a story first. New single “Fire at Will,” released September 30th, marks the start of a new chapter for the project, one built on narrative humor rather than straightforward melodic rock balladry.
Fire at Will
“Fire at Will” takes a common phrase and turns it into a running joke at one unlucky man’s expense. What starts as an ordinary day for a man named Will spirals into an increasingly absurd chain of encounters, police, robbers, baseball players, even a military firing range, each one finding a new way to twist the phrase “fire at will” into a personal problem he can’t seem to escape. It’s a playful, narrative approach that fits Paul’s background as a novelist, treating the song less like a conventional melodic rock statement and more like a short story set to music, complete with escalating stakes and a clear comedic throughline.
Musically, the track opens on an 80s-style guitar riff that sets an immediately epic, intense tone, with vocals entering in a striking high register reminiscent of classic 80s rock ballads. The arrangement builds out from there into a guitar-driven composition, distorted chords and layered background vocals filling out the chorus while long notes and arpeggios open up real sonic space around them. Around the three-minute mark, a guitar solo bursts through with real technical flair, and a cooler bridge near the four-minute point strips things back to just vocals and drums for a moment, landing with an almost gospel-like feel before the song builds back up. That dynamic range, 80s rock energy balanced against moments of real restraint, gives “Fire at Will” more staying power than a straightforward comedic premise might suggest, and the chorus itself is built entirely around the title phrase’s double meaning, letting the hook land differently each time depending on which new scenario Will has stumbled into. The accompanying music video leans into that same narrative, following the character through his unfortunate chain of mishaps.
It’s a clear tonal shift from Paul’s more earnest recent single, “Never Forever,” a collaborative ballad recorded through the global platform Musiversal, but the same attention to storytelling carries through regardless of genre or tone, reaffirming Paul’s ability to tell a story whether he’s writing fiction or music.
Final Thoughts
“Fire at Will” is a genuinely fun, narrative-driven single that pairs real 80s-rock musicianship with a sharp comedic hook, and it’s an exciting new direction for a project built on storytelling. It’s available now on Spotify. Follow D.D.R. on Instagram.
