Sergiy Bolotny is a Ukrainian-born violinist now based in the Netherlands, where he serves as Assistant Second Concertmaster of the Noord Nederlands Orkest. He trained in Lviv, Kyiv, and Vienna, and alongside his orchestral work he performs chamber music and writes compositions of his own.

Reflections: Oh, Human Destiny

His latest piece is a direct answer to the war in his home country, and it opens a new cycle of works built on Ukrainian themes. At its centre is the traditional folk song “ะžะน, ะดะพะปะต ะปัŽะดััŒะบะฐ,” known in English as “Oh, Human Destiny,” an old melody he sets against something far colder. Beneath it, the violin locks into a repeating, clockwork figure that simply keeps going, no matter what the tune above it is trying to say.

That pairing is the whole story. The folk line sounds tired and fragile, like a voice that has been carrying too much for too long, while the rhythm underneath never lets up or offers a moment’s rest. It captures the weariness, the sorrow, and the stubborn refusal to give up that define daily life for people whose houses, families, and everyday security have been torn away, yet who still have to face each new day regardless.

Bolotny keeps the writing bare and lets the idea do the heavy lifting. There are no big swelling climaxes and no showy passages meant to impress, and at just under four minutes the piece says what it needs to and stops. That economy is exactly why it hits so hard. For Bolotny, the work is both a prayer and a straightforward appeal to the people with the power to end the fighting, asking them simply to bring the war to a close. You can hear both in every bar.

Final Thoughts

“Reflections: Oh, Human Destiny” is not easy listening, and it is not meant to be. It is a sobering, deeply personal piece from an artist turning grief into something the rest of us can sit with.
