Adam Wedd grew up in South West London, picked up piano at seven, and swiped his dad’s guitar at thirteen, never quite giving it back. That early theft eventually turned into a Master’s in Commercial Songwriting from Tileyard Music and years spent working behind the bar at Abbey Road Studios and Metropolis Studios, soaking up the atmosphere of two of London’s most storied rooms before he ever had the means to record in one himself. “Steamtrain” is the first single off his debut album, “Hangover Full of Memories,” due September 25, produced by Paul Tipler (Placebo, Stereolab) and Marek Deml (Sam Smith, McFly), and mastered by Tom Hall right back at Abbey Road.

The song leans on a steam engine as its central image, something big, loud, and unstoppable once it gets moving, as a stand-in for a relationship built on real trust rather than hesitation. There’s nothing tentative about the picture Wedd paints, two people picking up speed together, committed to wherever the tracks lead, and the song carries that same forward momentum in its energy, equal parts hopeful and a little breathless.

Wedd’s making an unusual bet with the album this single is pulled from too. Rather than dropping “Hangover Full of Memories” onto streaming right away, he’s holding it back until 1,000 physical copies, CD and vinyl combined, actually sell, a deliberate nod to the fans still willing to buy something they can hold rather than just stream. The album gets its proper send-off on September 24 with a release show at Cart & Horses.

None of this comes out of nowhere. Wedd’s music has already reached more than 500 radio stations worldwide, including BBC, SiriusXM, Absolute Radio, and Z100, and he’s sold out shows in both London and New York. Going from working the bar at Abbey Road to headlining his own record feels like the kind of full-circle moment that’s earned rather than lucky.
