Richard Green is an Italian guitarist and composer, based in London since studying music there after finishing school in Italy. Though he originally trained as a guitarist, he found his real calling in composing his own music rather than working as a session player, and he’s built a catalogue stretching back to 2020 that moves freely between jazz, electronic, rock, and pop. New single “Wasted Tears” comes from his forthcoming six-track EP, Electronic Therapy, due out in June.
Wasted Tears
“Wasted Tears” pulls together a dense, cinematic atmosphere built on robust synthesizers, a slightly wild, rambunctious beat, and deep, colorful layers of tone that all lock together like puzzle pieces. Green built the whole thing in his own home studio, working with a Roland keyboard and synth alongside a Gibson Les Paul, a Fender Stratocaster, and an acoustic guitar, then had it mixed and mastered at Studio Elfo in his hometown of Piacenza. Some of the synth tones sit upfront delivering full-bodied hooks, while others handle rhythm underneath, and a few experimental, bell-like textures give the track an eighties radio-pop flavor filtered through a much more cinematic lens, almost like part of a film score. The arrangement keeps shifting and building as it goes, new synth lines entering partway through to push the energy back up and take the song in a slightly different direction, giving it real surprise without ever losing its shape.
The song’s roots are personal. Green wrote it while thinking back on an old experience from a few years earlier, and the title reflects tears spent on something that, in hindsight, never really deserved them. He credits his melodic instincts to growing up on the Beatles, a lifelong influence passed down from his father, and that pull toward strong melody comes through even inside all the track’s electronic experimentation. Rather than performing live right now, Green has been focused entirely on writing and producing, with a packed release schedule that includes further singles and a second EP later in the year.
