Bash Co. has been writing solo material since 1999, balancing that work with a day job as a teacher and a separate life as a member of a Portuguese band. New single “Velvet” came together during a six-day trip to Prague, a city that shaped the song far more directly than his usual, much slower writing process typically allows.

The city functions almost like a character in its own right, with references to Franz Kafka, its landmarks, the Iron Curtain, and the 1989 Velvet Revolution woven directly into the lyrics. Those references could easily have come across as decorative name-dropping, but instead they give the song real setting, placing private emotion right alongside memories of division, repression, and eventual freedom. INXS factor into the story too, their song “Never Tear Us Apart” and its own connection to Prague feeding directly into Bash Co.’s inspiration. Recorded in his home studio, the track builds toward its second half with drums deliberately shaped to evoke marching soldiers, a subtle production choice tying the rhythm back to the Velvet Revolution and the tension of that era.
