Richard Green is a classically trained composer with roots split between Milan and London, and his new single, “Age of Dreams,” opens First Light, the first EP in an ambitious three-part project mapping childhood, adulthood, and legacy across three separate releases. Green has called it his most important artistic project to date, and “Age of Dreams” sets that larger story in motion by grounding it in childhood, the point where the whole arc of a human life begins.

The track centers on a genuinely relatable idea: childhood as a stretch of life where imagination feels limitless and anything seems possible, an openness that gets harder to hold onto with age. Green built the piece around that tension, treating youth almost like a place you eventually get pushed out of, and letting the music itself carry that ache rather than leaning on lyrics to spell it out. To bring the composition to life, he handed his writing over to pianist Irene Veneziano and string quartet Archimia, and the pairing gives the track real weight. Veneziano’s playing has an unforced confidence to it, letting phrases sit and breathe rather than rushing to fill space, while Archimia’s strings swell and pull back with real restraint, adding atmosphere without tipping into melodrama. Recorded at Studio Elfo near Piacenza, not far from Green’s own childhood turf, the track blends clearly classical bones, the kind of voicing you’d expect from formal training, with a pop and indie skin and even a light touch of blues phrasing, and the combination holds together with far more ease than a genre blend this ambitious usually manages. The piano carries the sense of wonder at the song’s center, while the strings quietly carry the sense of loss creeping in underneath it, giving the piece a real emotional pull without ever feeling heavy-handed.
