Rory Powers

We have previously featured Rory Powers, with his track, “Stories.” Now, he just released a new track, “Down Bad.” Check out the full track and review below!

About Rory Powers

Inspired by pop renegades such as Charli XCX, Porter Robinson, and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Rory Powers is able to take striking, left-field ideas and place them in a riveting pop context. From music to podcasting, punk to electronics, he’s driven by a passion for DIY ethics. Having spent years building an audience, he’s now ready to step out on his own.

New Music

Continuing his impressive blend of storytelling and personal experience, ‘Down Bad’ maintains the theme of relationships that was ever-present in Powers’ debut single ‘Stories’ which quickly gained attention from BBC Introducing, Hot Press and Live Nation’s Ones to Watch. Experimenting with the sound of this track, using hip hop beats and stabbing pop synths, the song is about the chaotic feeling of falling for someone who doesn’t feel the same way you do.

Rory explains, “it’s a rollercoaster – you’re in love, you’re heartbroken, you’re up, you’re down. It’s someone having a power over you that overrides your better judgement” He continues “it’s a song about when you’re in a situation where it feels as though there’s an imbalance of power. It’s about chasing after someone else in a relationship. The song always had this kind of playful energy that I loved from the start. I knew it was always going to be a bit of a challenge mixing that kind of energy with a song about being ‘down bad’, but in the end you have these lighthearted, self aware lyrics that don’t shy away from the situation.”

Review

The new track is really well done. This is such an energetic song that puts Rory’s vocals at the forefront of the song. He does a great job at keeping up the energy of the song, all while showing off his vocal skills. This is one of my favorite tracks in recent weeks. Definitely a strong performance that deserves to be added to your playlists.
